Latin American Film Festival to be Held at SIUE
Five award-winning films will be shown Oct. 1-28 as part of the Latin American Film Festival at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. In Spanish with English subtitles, the films will interest a wide audience.
The public is invited to attend the following films:
- Aqui y Alla (Here and There) will open the Festival at 5 p. m. Thursday, Oct. 1 in the Morris University Center. The film is an unexpected take on the traditional Mexican immigrant story as it captures the complex homecoming of a loving father.
- Mr. Kaplan will be shown at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 and Friday, Oct. 16 in Woodland Hall. Jacob Kaplan fled Europe for South America because of World War II. Now at the age of 76, he recruits a former police officer to investigative an elderly German, whom he suspects is a runaway Nazi.
- Simon Bolivar (who led Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Peru and Ecuador toward independence) is the subject of El Libertador (The Liberator). This epic film, with breath-taking landscapes, will be aired at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 in Woodland Hall.
- The viewing of 7 Cajas (7 Boxes) will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 in Woodland Hall. It is the story of a Paraguayan delivery boy who is offered a seemingly easy job that proves to be complicated.
- Infancia Clandestina (Clandestine Childhood) is an Argentinian story of militancy, undercover life and love set in the late 1970s. It will be shown at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 in Woodland Hall.
Parking is available in the Visitors Lot (B). Visitors must pay to park for the Wednesday and Thursday films, but parking is free for the Friday movie. The Morris University Center is next to the Visitors Lot (B), and Woodland Hall is a dormitory within walking distance. A map of SIUE is available at siue.edu/maps.
The festival is part of a Spanish Film Club series made possible with the support of Pragda, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain, and SPAIN Arts and Culture. The festival is hosted by SIUE’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, SIUE Housing, and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.
