SIUE Science Building West Recognized with Technology Award
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s newly renovated Science Building West has earned a Technology Award from the St. Louis Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Coveted within the industry, ASHRAE Technology Awards celebrate efficient energy use in buildings and environmental system performance. The award recognizes both SIUE and BRiC Partnership, the engineering firm that designed the building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
“We are proud to have received this prestigious recognition,” said John Renken, architect in the SIUE Department of Facilities Management. “This achievement exemplifies the University’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities for current and future generations, while minimizing the effect on our environment.”
The HVAC system installed in Science Building West consists of multiple elements that allow the complex to achieve significant energy savings.
“The energy efficient design provided an estimated savings of 15.7 percent better than the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) required ASHRAE standard,” Renken explained. “An energy recovery loop, high efficiency condensing boilers and a laboratory air sampling system are a few of the components that greatly reduce the carbon footprint of the building.”
Science Building West provides technologically advanced resources for students studying in the Departments of Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Environmental Sciences. The building has also received LEED Silver Certification.
As a first place award winner, SIUE and BRiC Partnership will now compete at ASHRAE’s regional level.
