SIUE Music Department Hosts its Largest Musical Theatre Summer Workshop
Students ranging from seventh grade through college drew crowds last week as they sang, dance and acted in their final performance of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Music Department’s summer workshop.
Forty students participated in the 2015 SIUE Musical Theatre Workshop. “Treble with a Cause: SIUE Musical Theatre” was the theme for the weeklong workshop.
“The students received daily voice lessons, monologue coaching, dance training, audition technique classes, daily performance classes and improvisation training,” said Dr. Marc Schapman, director of Graduate Studies in Music, director of SIUE Opera and summer workshop director.
This year’s workshop attracted the most participants since the Music Department has been sponsoring it over the last five years, according to Schapman.
The final performance featured solos and monologues performed by the students, Schapman added. Some of the numbers that the students starred in included:
- Bye, Bye Birdie
- How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
- Kinky Boots
