SIUE Police Department Carries Torch in Special Olympics Relay
The SIUE Police Department today joined in a 34-year-old tradition of Law Enforcement agencies serving as Guardians of the Flame, carrying the torch and delivering the Flame of Hope to state and local Special Olympics.
Five SIUE Police Department representatives supported the Special Olympics by helping deliver the Flame of Hope part of the way to Los Angeles for the 2015 World Summer Games. Officer Tom Poenitske, detective Brad Hershberger, officer Todd Schmidt, detective Phil Ragsdale and officer Ryan Bandy carried the flame.
This year, the SIUE Police Department is sponsoring Special Olympian Steve Vandemore. The department and Steve walked a half-mile segment carrying the Flame of Hope.
Bank of America presents the Special Olympics Unified Relay Across America. While Illinois has two separate routes crossing through its borders, the Central Unified Relay route traveled from Marion through SIUE to St. Louis today. The SIUE contingent began at the Bank of Edwardsville, came down St. Louis Street, Route 157, Lewis Road, University Drive and culminated at the Hairpin.
The Special Olympics Unified Relay Across America is an historic event with three simultaneous torch run routes covering all 50 states. By carrying the Flame of Hope, the Law Enforcement community plays an important role in creating respectful and inclusive communities for people with intellectual disabilities.
Vandemore has been competing in the Special Olympics for 34 years. He has participated in bowling, track and field, equestrian skills, bocce ball and softball. Vandemore has medaled many times, including receiving several gold medals. Growing up in a family of six children, Steve has always enjoyed being active, so it was natural for him to become a Special Olympian.
