SIUE’s Mueth Receives Phi Eta Sigma Scholarship
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Lauren Mueth is the recipient of a $6,000 undergraduate scholarship from Phi Eta Sigma (PES), a national honor society.
Mueth is a biological sciences major with a medical sciences specialty in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Smithton native is a PES member who met the minimum qualification of a 3.5 grade point average. Other criteria included participation in local chapter activities, evidence of creative ability and potential for success in a chosen field.
Mueth plans on pursuing a career as a physician assistant and has become highly involved on the SIUE campus. She served as secretary during 2014-15 for both PES and the Pre-Medical Association, and was recently elected as the latter organization’s vice president for the 2015-16 academic year.
“Not only will the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society scholarship allow me to continue on my educational journey, but it will also give me the confidence that I need in order to reach my goals,” said Mueth, who is unsure who nominated her for the award. “I have been an extremely dedicated student my entire life. I knew from a young age that education is essential for success. With unwavering determination, I truly believe that I will reach my goals of becoming a medical professional.”
She is also a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, both honors organizations. Along with being involved on campus, she spent her 2014 summer break volunteering in the St. Elizabeth's Hospital emergency department in Belleville.
Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines. PES chapters are chartered on 378 campuses across the U.S. Inspired by the past and dedicated to the future, the society’s mission is to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning. Since its founding, more than 1.1 million scholars have been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma. Approximately $300,000 in scholarships is awarded annually by the national organization, and local chapters award many additional thousands.
