NCAA Celebrates Academic Performance of Two SIUE Athletic Teams
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s tennis and men’s cross country teams have been recognized for top academic performance by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The teams are among 15 Ohio Valley Conference programs receiving honors.
Each year, the NCAA publicly recognizes selected Division I sports teams based on their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).
“We’re extremely pleased and excited two of our teams have been honored,” said Brad Hewitt, director of Intercollegiate Athletics at SIUE. “APR goes hand-in-hand with our graduation success rate. We remain committed; first and foremost, to graduating student-athletes, and having them excel in the classroom. We’re excited for our growth on the field, on the courts, and on the course as our students continue to improve athletically.”
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team's APR score is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible, multiplied by 1,000. It includes four years (this year's numbers included the school years of 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, and 2013-14). High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards posted APR scores ranging from 980 to a perfect 1,000.
