SIUE School of Pharmacy Conducting Community Blood Pressure Event
Students and faculty of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy are making blood pressure checks convenient by conducting screenings for employees at area businesses on Friday, May 29.
"It's estimated that more than half of people with high blood pressure are not aware that they have the disease," said Dr. Christopher Lynch, clinical programs director and professor at SIUE. "By going to places of business we are able to reach those who might never go to a health fair and who have not recently seen a care provider."
Student and faculty pharmacists will check employee's blood pressure, and counsel people on any action they should take to address their blood pressure reading.
"Last year, we were able to measure the pressure of more than 350 people in just four hours,” Lynch said. “This year we hope to reach 400. It's quick, easy and painless."
This is the second year the school is staging this initiative as a way to give back to the community.
Businesses in Edwardsville or Glen Carbon interested in having a team conduct blood pressure screenings can contact Lynch at 618-650-5139.
