SIUE Student Receives James R. Anderson Scholarship
Whitney Cates, resident in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougar Village, has been selected as the recipient of the 2015-2016 James R. Anderson Housing Scholarship.
Cates, a native of Mount Vernon, is studying accounting and plans to earn a master’s degree and become a certified public accountant.
The Anderson Housing Scholarship was created in memory of Anderson, a former associate director of University Housing at SIUE. Recipients receive a $1,000 per semester stipend.
The requirements of the annual scholarship include:
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Demonstrated civic leadership in community service
- Involvement in University Housing activities
Cates was described by others as exemplary, highly successful in academic pursuits and having a positive impact in the classroom. She has participated in the “Take Your Professor to Lunch” program sponsored by University Housing. Cates was also a member of the Star Program at her previous institution.
“We’re pleased to be able to honor Whitney with a James R. Anderson Housing Scholarship award,” said Michael Schultz, director of University Housing. “James believed not only in the value of education in and out of the classroom, but also of family, community involvement and service.”
