CAS Honors Day Recognizes More Than 200 Students
More than 200 students were recognized for outstanding achievement, and scholarships totaling more than $110,000 were awarded at the annual College of Arts and Sciences Honors Day Convocation at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. A crowd of nearly 600 students, faculty, family, friends and award sponsors were on hand at the Morris University Center on Sunday, April 19.
The achievements of 222 individual students within 20 CAS departments and programs were noted. A total of 265 awards were acknowledged.
A large number of award and scholarship sponsors were on hand to mark the occasion. These included individuals and representatives from many organizations and companies within the immediate area, but also from as far away as Quincy and Springfield, Ill., and even New Orleans.
Several awards and scholarships established either from memorials or as legacy gifts were given for the first time:
- The Buezetta Meyer and Charlot Hentz Scholarship for students in applied communication studies and mass communications: senior Ellen Carrow and junior Grant Claunch (applied communication studies), and senior Jozette Spaid (mass communications)
- The Charles W. Chapman Memorial Scholarship: Senior Shelia Madewell
- The Anita Rogers Kolesa Award in applied sociology: Senior Rickie D. Jackson
Other new sizable scholarships and awards include:
- The Agnes Kuhlman Music Scholarship: Senior Tyler Ciesler, senior Tyler Green, freshman Justin Murray, Teaching Assistant Thomas Stearns and senior Grant Tracey
- The Dr. Carol A. Keene Scholarship in philosophy: Junior David Favre
- The John Mareing Philosophy Scholarship: Junior Stephen Wilke
- The Carlson Award for Creative Expression in Academic Disciplines: Junior Sterling Allen
