SIUE’s Art and Design West Building Recognized in Local Media for its Green Accomplishments
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Art and Design West Building was featured in last month’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch for being one of many reasons Illinois again tops the country in being environmentally responsible and resource efficient in construction.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch pictured SIUE’s Art and Design West Building and noted that it received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
According to Patrick Long, facilities architect/project manager in Facilities Management, the two-story 29,000 square foot building received the LEED Gold Certification for several reasons, including:
- Use of “green” building materials and a strict adherence to “green” design philosophy as well as a strict adherence to “green” construction processes
- The construction involved minimal amounts of construction waste going to the local landfill
- The building was designed and constructed to be highly efficient with respect to the use of campus utilities (water and electricity)
Besides being energy efficient and environmentally friendly, the Art and Design West addition is also picturesque, according to Bill Retzlaff, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “To me, the addition of the ADW building compliments and enhances the natural beauty of the West entrance of the campus,” he added.
