SIUE University Housing Receives Certificate of Sustainability
University Housing residents at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville donated 3,256 pounds to USAgain and the program awarded them with a Certificate of Sustainability.
Last spring, University Housing partnered with USAgain (pronounced "use-again"). USAgain provides consumers with a convenient and eco-friendly option to dispose of excess clothing, which is diverted from landfills and used for resale in the U.S. and abroad.
This spring, University Housing is once again partnering with USAgain to collect textiles, including clothes and shoes. Collection boxes will be placed in the lobby of each residence hall the Thursday before finals until the Monday after finals. Bins can be found in Cougar Village parking lots, near buildings 422 and 516 throughout the entire year.
“University Housing and our entire campus community have taken great strides in the last few years to be more sustainable,” said Kathleen Gardner, associate director of Residence Life who coordinates the USAgain partnership.
“This effort has ranged from facility improvements and better use of technology to providing meaningful opportunities for students to learn about the triple bottom line of sustainability,” Gardner added. “We look to our community of residents and staff to help us in reducing the University's environmental impact. One way to reduce our impact is to limit what ends up in landfills.”
