Young Scientists Descend Upon SIUE Campus with Science Projects

More than 250 students, grades 5-12, attended the 31st Science and Engineering Research Challenge (SERC) regional competition Saturday on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
The students displayed 205 projects in the Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom. They were joined by more than 600 people, which included parents, teachers and volunteer judges.
One of the exhibits was presented by Jeremiah Krebs, a seventh grader from Shiloh Middle School. Jeremiah provided information about his AIRMAZING seat, which assists elderly and disabled people in getting up from a chair. Jeremiah was inspired to help others because of his experiences with his deceased grandfather who had Alzheimer's and dementia.
Some of the top winners included:
- Challenge Champion, Sally Nijim of Willowbrook High School
- First Place Junior Division, Matthew Milnor of St. Ambrose School
- First Place Senior Division, Brian Fitzgerald of Governor French Academy

Jenae Wright, a student at Good Shepherd Lutheran in Collinsville, presents the effect that temperature has on the electrical potential of solar power. Judging her exhibit was Jerry Weinberg, associate provost in Graduate Studies and Research; and Anne Werner, assistant professor in the Department of Construction.
