SIUE’s Arts & Issues Presents Water Conservationist Robert Glennon
Many Americans don’t value water and think that it is infinite, according to a professor of law and best-selling author who will speak on April 2 on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Robert Glennon is the author of Unquenchable: America’s Water Crisis and What To Do About It, which was published in April 2009 by Island Press. He will give a presentation at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2 in the Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom.
Glennon’s visit is being presented by SIUE’s Arts & Issues and is sponsored by the SIUE Graduate School.
Glennon, a Regents’ Professor and Morris K. Udall Professor of Law and Public Policy in the Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, is also author of the highly-acclaimed Water Follies: Groundwater Pumping and the Fate of America’s Fresh Waters (2002).
The author and law professor has been sought out for his knowledge on the water crisis, appearing on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “Talk of the Nation” with Neal Conan, “The Diane Rehm Show,” C-SPAN2’s “Book TV” and more.
“Most of us are spoiled. We turn on the faucet and out comes as much as we want for less than we pay for cell phone service or cable television,” Glennon said on the “The Daily Show.”
“It’s a matter of valuing water. And we don’t appreciate how valuable water is. In part because we think of water like we do air. We believe it’s infinite and limitless, when in fact it’s finite and exhaustible.
“We have a crisis, but a crisis is a time of opportunity. There are a bunch of remedies for this, but we need the moral compass and the political will to act, to keep the crisis from really becoming a catastrophe,” Glennon said.
