SIUE Dance Alumni Help Arts and Issues Celebrate 30th Anniversary
Three innovative dance companies, all founded by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville alumni, will deliver captivating performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 in Dunham Hall Theater.
MILLS/works, Compulsion Dance Theatre and the Modern America Dance Company (MADCO) in St. Louis, are expected to delight audiences with a variety of entertaining and inspiring dance works. Their performances are part of SIUE’s Arts & Issues 30th anniversary celebration and are sponsored by Commerce Bank.
MILLS/works and Compulsion Dance & Theatre were founded by choreographers Joseph Mills and Michael Mizerany. Mills graduated from SIUE in 1982 with a bachelor’s of Fine Arts in visual arts with an emphasis in sculpture and drawing. Mizerany attended SIUE from Fall 1981-Spring 1986.
The third dance company, MADCO, was co-founded by Alcine Wiltz, who established the academic dance program at SIUE, and Australian born Ross Winter. MADCO was originally created under the name Mid America Dance Company. The executive/artistic director of MADCO is Stacy West, an SIUE alum.
MILLS/works and Compulsion Dance Theatre will perform selected original works. MADCO will present an excerpt from “Liquid Roads”, a show inspired by music that has traveled the length of the Mississippi River and incorporates live musicians.
This presentation is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Illinois Arts Council and General Mills Foundation.
