SIUE Biological Sciences Professor Publishes Research on Toad Locomotion
A team of international researchers, including Dr. Richard Essner, Jr., associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, has published a study on toad locomotion.
The study, published in Functional Ecology, may explain why Cane Toads are such successful invaders.
“We show that toads save energy by doing a bounding gait, rather than stringing together individual hops,” Essner explained. “Regular use of this type of gait has only been observed in mammals previously.”
Writer Sarah Zielinski further details the study in an article posted Friday in Science News.
