Reviewing the Grade Center in Blackboard for Accurate Calculations

As a faculty member, ensuring that your Grade Center in Blackboard is set up correctly is essential for accurate grade calculations. Errors in grade settings can lead to student confusion and grading discrepancies. To avoid issues before the end of the semester crunch time, follow these key steps when reviewing your Grade Center.
1. Verify Column Settings
Each grade column should have the correct:
- Points Possible – Ensure it matches your syllabus.
- Category Assignment – Categories impact weighted grading.
- Calculation Method – Some columns are manually entered, while others calculate automatically.
- Use the Column Organization view to quickly see and reorder all of the items in the Grade Center.
2. Check Weighted Grading Setup
If your course uses weighted grading:
- Confirm that category weights match your syllabus.
- Ensure that all grade items are properly categorized.
- Double-check that the total weight equals 100%.
- Make sure you included all intended columns and/or categories.
3. Review Running Total Settings
The Total or Weighted Total columns can be set to:
- Include only graded items (running total enabled).
- Include all items, counting missing work as zero (running total disabled).
Make sure this setting aligns with your grading policy.
4. Ensure Exemptions and Dropped Grades Are Applied Correctly
- If you drop the lowest grade in a category, verify that Blackboard is applying this correctly in the weighted total column settings.
- Check that any manually exempted grades are intentional and do not affect calculations unexpectedly.
5. Use Student Preview Mode
Use the Student Preview Mode to see grades as students do. This helps confirm whether students are receiving accurate information and ensures transparency.
6. Cross-Check with an Excel Download
For a final accuracy check, download the Grade Center as an Excel file and manually verify calculations. This is particularly helpful before finalizing grades at the end of the term.
7. Test with Sample Data
Save the Student Preview profile and manually enter hypothetical grades to verify how Blackboard calculates final scores.
By taking these steps, faculty can ensure that students receive accurate grades, reducing grade disputes and last-minute corrections. A well-maintained Grade Center supports fair and transparent grading, helping students stay informed about their academic progress.
