What assignment tool to use for my courses? Blackboard assignment or Turnitin?
Blackboard (Bb) assignments and Turnitin assignments are both used to collect and grade a student’s paper. However, there are some differences between the two tools, which can make one a better choice than the other for certain types of assignments.
Bb assignments are a good choice for assignments that do not require plagiarism detection, such as:
-
Short essays/papers.
-
Group writing assignments.
Turnitin assignments are a good choice for high-stakes assignments that require plagiarism detection, such as:
-
Term/research papers.
-
Any other assignment where students are expected to cite outside sources.
Turnitin also offers several additional features that Bb assignments do not, such as:
-
Originality reports: Turnitin scans student submissions against a massive database of sources to identify any potential instances of plagiarism.
-
Peer review: Turnitin allows instructors to set up peer review (PeerMark) assignments, where students can review and provide feedback on each other's work.
-
Grading rubrics: Turnitin allows instructors to create and use grading rubrics to grade student work more consistently and efficiently.
Things to consider.
Ultimately, the best way to decide whether to use a Bb assignment or a Turnitin assignment is to consider the specific requirements of the assignment. If the assignment requires plagiarism detection, then Turnitin is the better choice. You may also want to consider how familiar/comfortable your students are using these assignment tools. If your students are more familiar with Bb assignments, then you may want to stick with that tool. Visit this link to view ITS KnowledgeBase articles to help with assignments.
