Video Quizzes with YuJa to Increase Cognitive Load

Do you create videos for your courses? Want to use those videos to help students learn even better? Consider adding quizzes or reflective pauses to your videos in YuJa. In 1988, John Sweller developed the Cognitive Load Theory which “suggests that our working memory is only able to hold a small amount of information at any one time and that instructional methods should avoid overloading it in order to maximize learning.”* In adding questions or pauses in videos, we can help students retain information by allowing information transfer from working memory to long-term memory.
YuJa has several different question types: multiple choice, select multiple, short answer, true false, reflective pause, decision point, and fill-in-the-blank. You can add a point value to all of the question types, with the exception of the reflective pause, for increased incentive to watch the full video. Short answer and fill-in-the-blank questions must be graded manually. The points are then automatically added to the Blackboard grade center.
To add a quiz to a video in YuJa, follow the guidance in this ITS KnowledgeBase article . Videos can have multiple quizzes attached to them. After you are finished creating the quiz, you are then ready to add it to Blackboard. View these instructions to add the quiz to Blackboard.
