YuJa - Linking Video Quizzes to the Blackboard Grade Center

YuJa is now available to all SIUE faculty, staff, and students as a replacement for TechSmith Knowmia, and among its many features is the ability to add quizzing to videos. Video quizzing is a great tool for formative assessment, checking student understanding, and reinforcing important points within lecture videos. These short, informal quizzes can be linked to the Blackboard grade center through the YuJa Video Quizzes and Analytics option under the Build Content menu in Blackboard.
The first step is to create the quiz in YuJa. Within your YuJa media library, locate the video that you want to add a quiz to, hover over its thumbnail, and click More. From there, access the Quizzes tab in the left navigation menu and click Create Video Quiz. It is important to give the quiz a descriptive title that includes the course ID so you can easily find it when you go to deploy it in Blackboard. You can choose from multiple choice, multiple select, short answer, true/false, reflective pause, and decision point question types.
Once the quiz has been created, you must deploy the quiz using the YuJa Video Quizzes and Analytics option under the Build Content menu within the content area of your Blackboard shell. Using this Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integration will create the connection between the YuJa video quiz and the Blackboard grade center. The quiz will appear as a web link, so it’s crucial that you add descriptive text to inform students that they should respond to the questions throughout the video and click Submit when finished. Also, you will need to edit the item in Blackboard to set the point value and due date of the video quiz.
Some question types, like multiple choice and true/false, are graded automatically. After a brief delay, student scores will begin to appear in the Blackboard grade center. Short answer questions must be reviewed and scored manually in YuJa. From the YuJa Grade Book, it is also possible to do a manual sync of the quiz grades so they will populate immediately in the Blackboard grade center.
