As you've probably heard by now, yesterday Apple announced its new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models coming out this fall. While battery life is improved, and the camera gets a new wide angle and zoom lens, there are not many other substantial upgrades from last year's iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max models.
While a device upgrade may not be worth your money, the latest software upgrade is free and should bring some notable improvements to your current iPhone. Available later next week, iOS 13 brings several big improvements. Here are some of the best new features.
Dark Mode
The standout new feature is probably dark mode. With dark mode turned on, the bright white backgrounds will become more black and gray hues, making the display easier on your eyes, especially when reading at night. Dark mode is optional and can be turned on and off in the Control Center.
Dark mode can also be scheduled to come on at a certain time of day.
Settings --> Display and Brightness --> Schedule
New photos tab/organization
The Photos app will get some additional organization making it easier to browse your photo collection. When clicking the Photos tab at the bottom, new sections called Years, Months, and Days will be available.
New photo editor
The photo editor will be getting a redesign, making it much more straightforward and simple to use. The existing tools will come with an intensity slider. There will also be new editing tools including white balance, sharpening, vignette, noise reduction, and vibrance settings. With the new and more robust photo editor, a third party photo editing app may be no longer needed.
Video editing tools
The new video editing tools will allow you to crop, rotate, and change the aspect ratio. New adjustments tools, including exposure and filters, will also now be available for video editing.
File downloads in Safari
There will be a new Downloads icon in the toolbar. If you find a file to download while on Safari, tap on it and click the Download button. All downloads will automatically be stored in your Downloads folder in your iCloud drive.
There are many other new features including audio sharing with Airpods, an upgraded Maps app, and more stringent location services controls.
Apple iOS 13 will be available for download on September 19th.
