Can I renew my IACUC protocol after three years?

Per the OLAW Assurance, protocols cannot be renewed after the three-year approval period.

Our Assurance states:

  • Protocols are approved for a maximum of 36 months. That is, all protocols expire no later than the three-year anniversary of the initial IACUC review.
  • If activities will continue beyond the expiration date, prior to expiration of the original or preceding protocol a new protocol must be submitted, reviewed, and approved as described in Part III.D.6. above.

If you will be continuing your study, after the approved three-year period, you will need to submit a new protocol for the same study. Fortunately, Kuali has recently added a “Copy” feature that allows PIs to essentially copy and paste a protocol into a new version of the protocol.

If the original protocol was created on an outdated template, you may need to answer some new questions.

Please note, it is important to submit this new protocol with plenty of time for the approval process, otherwise you may need to submit a holding protocol

If you have questions about this process, please email researchcompliance@siue.edu.
