Position Description

Position Title:  Basic Needs Graduate Assistant

The Basic Needs Graduate Assistant is a 50% Graduate Assistant appointment equaling 20 hours per week. Compensation is $736.75/pay period (semi-monthly – 9 pay periods in total). Mostly on-site work is required. Hours are mostly weekday hours, occasional night, or weekend. The position is only available Spring 2025. Start date would be February 1, 2025 and run through June 15, 2025.

Responsibilities:

The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Basic Needs will play a vital role in delivering basic needs services to under-resourced SIUE students. Responsibilities include supporting the weekly operations of the Cougar Cupboard Pantry, reviewing and processing SIUE Student Emergency Assistance Fund applications, and assisting students with applications for SNAP and Medicaid benefits. As a member of the Dean of Students team, the GA is expected to uphold the division's commitment to inclusion and foster a sense of belonging for all students.

Additionally, the GA will contribute to departmental goal setting, strategic planning, and assessment efforts.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • - Promote basic needs resources through campus education and marketing initiatives.
  • - Supervise a team of four Student Basic Needs Navigators (student staff members).
  • - Manage the intake and access processes for students seeking basic needs consultations and resources.
  • - Assist the Student Care and Advocacy Coordinator with the coordination of collecting donations and picking up pantry items.
  • - Oversee the stocking, organization, and distribution of personal hygiene products for students in need.
  • - Evaluate and assess the effectiveness of current basic needs practices.
  • - Conduct care meetings with students to address concerns related to their access to basic needs.
  • - Perform other duties as assigned.
