Teaching Assistantship (1961-2024)

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Earned bachelor’s degree. Currently admitted to or pursuing a graduate degree at SIUE. Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work with high-performing students. Must be able to create engaging programming attuned to the needs of honors students. Must be able to work with general direction and limited direct supervision. Must be creative and detail-oriented.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience as an honors students or working with honors students. Previous experience in creating and implementing programming, workshops, etc. targeted towards student success, academic skills, or student engagement. 

Position Description

Three positions, with separate responsibilities, but cross-trained to provide supports for all JMHP activities.
(1) Student Interventions TA: providing support to students participating in the JMHP informal support group (Gaggle), those students taking HONS 420 independent study for academic correction, and students requiring academic intervention

(2) Interventions & Support TA: providing direct engagement with students on University academic warning or probation, students on financial aid probation, and students at risk of non-recovery of GPA

(3) Service & Engagement TA: working with Service Coordinator to create service opportunities, expand engagement opportunities for students in other campus activities and leadership, and facilitate reflection necessary for these to be true learning opportunities

General Responsibilities Across All Positions
* Providing support for incoming first-year students in the early transitions of the semester, and providing support and guidance beyond Week 3
* Providing support for continuing students in areas not traditionally covered by academic coursework, but that are essential to academic success (time management, career exploration, etc.)
* Providing support for student engagement, especially that related to academic area and toward meeting the honors service requirement.
* Assisting in responding to Starfish flags as they related to academic support (attendance, missing assignments, etc.)

General Notes
* Some flexibility in scheduling, accommodating unique student programming that may take place outside of traditional work hours
* Leading or co-participating in honors classrooms/honors presentations (on applicable topics) will be included for each of the TA positions.
