Job Description
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking a knowledgeable NAGPRA Coordinator with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across SIU campuses to ensure compliance with all NAGPRA regulations. This role will report to the Center for Archaeological Investigations and provide support to the Center for Archaeological Investigations, University Museums, and Anthropology programs on the Carbondale, Edwardsville, and School of Medicine campuses and interact on a regular basis with museum leaders, legislators, and the media. The Coordinator will serve as the primary campus contact for compliance and research to ensure all applicable policies, laws, and regulations are being met and upheld. The coordinator will work closely and collaboratively with NAGPRA Committee leaders and team members. This is an administrative professional position.

- Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Ability to travel to meet with tribes, attend consultations, burials and other activities that are related to the repatriation process.
Examples of Duties Include:
- Serve as the SIU System lead and primary point of contact for all NAGPRA communications and inquiries about Native American remains and objects falling under NAGPRA regulations.
- Comprehensively catalogue human remains and cultural items in the SIU System collection, researching their relationships to tribal communities, and facilitating their repatriation.
- Acknowledge and respect a Tribe's sovereignty, cultural protocols, and cultural and religious practices and knowledge.
- Develop and strengthen tribal relationships.
- Represent SIU Campuses as lead NAGPRA staff at regular meetings with tribal government officials and representatives to coordinate NAGPRA compliance, address tribal concerns, and when possible, negotiate culturally sensitive resolutions.
- Chair the SIU System NAGPRA Committee.
- Deliver professional and public presentations on NAGPRA compliance.
- Conduct university training for relevant faculty and staff.
- Serve as primary resource and campus expert for campus staff and faculty regarding tribal relations.
- Manage administrative aspects of NAGPRA Program including developing the repatriation implementation plan and developing and overseeing program budget.
- Secure and manage grant funding for NAGPRA Program.
- Coordinate with relevant departments that hold culturally affiliated remains and NAGPRA-related objects.
- Maintain proper documentation of correspondence, consultations, loans, transfers, federal and state notices, inventories, summaries, and determinations regarding cultural affiliation, repatriation, or disposition.
- Develop and manage an annual affirmation and inventory of NAGPRA for all campuses working with, maintaining, or considering working with Native American and Native Hawaiian human remains and cultural items.
- Oversee processes and outcomes to ensure quality standards are met.
- Performs related activities as assigned and/or required.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Geography, Museum Studies or other relevant degrees and 2 years of relevant experience including:
- Experience working with NAGPRA Compliance Regulations and Federal/non-Federally Recognized Tribes in a higher education, non-profit or government setting.
- Evidence of securing and managing grants.
- PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Geography, or other relevant degrees.
- Experience with curation in Higher Education on NAGPRA Compliance Regulations and Federal/non-Federally Recognized Tribes in a higher education, non-profit or government setting.
- Candidate must be able to work while standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching for extended periods of time and able to perform these actions at heights while on ladders.
- Candidate must be physically capable of safely handling and moving large and/or delicate objects and be able to independently lift a minimum of 30 pounds.
- Candidate must possess a valid state driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
