Internships and Graduate Assistantships
Internships
The Department of Public Administration and Policy Analysis provides Master of Public Administration (MPA) students with opportunities to participate in "paid professional internships." Interns are selected on a competitive basis and gain valuable career experience while earning their MPA degree.
Internship positions involve an appointment as a graduate assistant by the Department. Interns are paid at stipulated graduate assistant rates and receive a tuition waiver.
Internships offered through the MPA program allow our students to:
- Gain valuable and practical experience
- Work with area public and nonprofit organizations
- Earn up to three hours of graduate credit
- Gain 20 paid hours per week
Interns are placed with public and nonprofit agencies and perform a variety of duties such as managing information systems, personnel administration, budgeting activities and other activities as required by the agency.

Graduate Assistantships
Graduate school can be financed with assistantships, fellowships and financial aid. Assistantships are available from the Department and pay a monthly stipend plus a full tuition waiver. These assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to students interested in attending graduate school full time and in working for the Department 20 hours a week. The work of a graduate assistantship in our department involves tutoring students, working with faculty on research projects, and participating in public service activities.
Graduate assistants provide assistance to the Department’s front desk operations. These individuals also assist professors as needed and work on the Department newsletter, brochure and plan Departmental events. A graduate assistant can also be assigned to a particular professor to work on research or grant work.
