SIUE College of Arts and Sciences Celebrates its 25th Anniversary Virtually
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, event cancellations forced universities across the country and the world to reimagine traditional gatherings. What was originally planned as an evening gala to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) became a near hourlong virtual event featuring many speakers and topics throughout the history of the College.
Former SIUE President Earl Lazerson began by discussing his decision to consolidate four SIUE schools into what is known today as CAS. Founding dean, Sharon Hahs, PhD, and her associate deans Dixie Engleman and Dave Steinberg talked about the beginnings of bringing the academic units together.
Alumnus Brian Henry, BS ‘95, and recent graduate Diana Sussman Tockstein, BA ’19, also joined in providing insight into the SIUE student experience and the value of their degrees post-college.
On his last day as CAS dean, Greg Budzban, PhD, hosted the event and presented several pre-recorded videos, including the rich history of the College and a congratulatory greeting from Chancellor Randy Pembrook, PhD.
After welcoming the newest dean, Kevin Leonard, PhD, who spoke on his vision for the future of CAS, Budzban closed out the event saying, “It has been the greatest honor and privilege of my professional career to serve as dean of CAS. May the next 25 years continue the rich legacy of the College of Arts and Sciences.”
