Undergraduate Student Commencement Speech Application Process
Congratulations as you prepare to complete your degree at SIUE! As with the spring semester earlier this year, commencement this fall will take place virtually. The ceremonies for the various academic units, including undergraduates for the College of Arts and Sciences, will be available for viewing on
December 18, 2020.
For each commencement ceremony, one student is awarded the honor of representing the graduating class and delivering remarks. Student speeches will be recorded in advance and incorporated into the virtual ceremony for December. Additional information on the student commencement speech and application process are outlined below.
The Student Commencement Address
The content of the student address should be relevant, uplifting and memorable for the students and guests at the ceremony. Student speakers should reflect on their academic experiences at SIUE and the University’s mission, vision and values. The student address should be personal and sincere, but the overall message should be universal and relatable.
Criteria for Eligibility
To be eligible for selection as the student speaker, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Candidate must be in good academic standing and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2.
- Candidate must be on track to be within 9 hours of completing degree requirements at the end of fall term.
Application Process
To be considered for selection as the student speaker at the 2020 Fall Commencement, submit the following application materials:- Letter of interest (please include your student ID number and degree program)
- Outline of your proposed speech
- Two letters of recommendation from SIUE faculty members
- A current copy of your resume including:
o Academic accomplishments, involvement or recognition/honors
o Involvement in student organizations, committees or boards
o Scholarships and awards
o Community service
o Research or unique student opportunities
All application materials must be submitted for consideration by 2 p.m. on November 6, 2020.
Electronic submissions are required. Letters of recommendation from faculty are allowed to be submitted separately.
