Historical Studies
Overview
The cooperative PhD with SIU Carbondale provides students with expertise in historical methodology and research, as well as subject-area expertise within the various fields of history. The conditions of this cooperative PhD program are outlined on the Memorandum of Understanding.
Students may concentrate in any of the fields where there is faculty expertise, including, but not limited to:
- African History
- African American History
- Ancient History
- Asian History
- Atlantic World History
- Environmental History
- European History (Ancient-Medieval-Renaissance-Early Modern-Modern)
- Latin American History (Colonial-Modern)
- Middle Eastern History
- Native American History
- United States History (Colonial-Antebellum-late 19th Century-20th Century)
- Urban History
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition and Fees
Co-op students can register for classes on either campus. They will pay tuition and fees to the campus at which they registered for the class. In a single semester, students may be registered on both campuses and be paying some tuition and fees on each campus. The exception is if the student is only taking classes at SIUE, in which case they will be registered for one credit of 601 with no charge at SIUC.
Assistantships
Assistantships are sometimes available on a competitive basis. More than two years of assistantship funding is unlikely. Co-op PhD students who have achieved candidacy (ABD) are not eligible for assistantships. In order for a student to hold an assistantship at SIUE, the student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and enroll in at least six credit hours per academic term. The student may be enrolled at SIUE only, or be enrolled at both SIUE and SIUC as long as the cumulative enrolled hours equal at least six. Financial Aid
SIUC is the degree-granting institution, so financial aid will be based out of SIUC.
- If the student is enrolled in classes at SIUE only, the student is not eligible for financial aid.
- If the student is enrolled in classes at SIUC only, the student is eligible for financial aid through SIUC.
- If the student is enrolled in classes at both SIUE and SIUC, and the student has enough hours at SIUC to receive maximum aid, then SIUC will offer all financial aid.
- If the student is enrolled in classes at both SIUE and SIUC, and does not have enough hours at SIUC to get maximum financial aid, SIUC will do a consortium agreement with SIUE and offer all financial aid.
Co-op PhD students are not eligible for Federal Work Study.
