SPSS 7.5: ASSIGNMENTS
Welcome to SPSS. Here are your assignments for the entire semester.
You will have the opportunity to learn everything you need to know about
SPSS and how to get started. Your assignments are due at the beginning
of each class period. Each assignment is worth 25 points. Subtract 5 points
a day for each assignment that is late. You will have an opportunity to
discuss each assignment in class. If you run into a problem between classes
please email your problem to me at vbfreedom5@aol.com. If you do not have
access to email at home please set up email at the University. If that
is not possible for you, please call and leave a message for me at the
University at (618) 650-2450. I will get back with you ASAP. Take your
time and read the student handbook and enjoy learning a computer software
package that will be helpful throughout your career.
Week One: No assignment (Give out assignments for entire semester)
Week Two: Assignment One

Read chapter 1 and follow the instructions. You will be asked to open a
data file, open the file and run the simple statistics that it ask you
too. Then print your output and turn it in. Please make sure that your
name is on you paper.
Week Three: Assignment Two

This assignment will introduce you to the tutorial and how to use the help
system. You should follow the instructions in chapter 2 and at the end
print a help topic and turn it in. I would encourage you to try more than
what the book ask you to do. Try seeking help on other topics. Don’t be
afraid.
Week Four: Assignment Three

chapter 3 introduces you to the data editor. This will be very interesting.
First, follow the tutorial if you feel uncomfortable. Chapter 9 will assist
you in creating new data files. You will be creating your own data file
and that file will be used with the other SPSS assignments.

Second, Use the attached data that I have provided for you and follow the
tutorial with you own data. Input data and name your variables. Follow
all of the instructions in the chapter.

Third, Save and print your data file. You’re finished now wasn’t that easy.
Turn in your output(printed data file).
Week Five: Assignment Four

Now comes the interesting part. Read chapter 4 which will give you the
opportunity to use the data you just put into the computer. This chapter
introduces you to working with statistics and output.

First, follow the tutorial and open the file "Employee data.sav".

Second, go back and open the data file that you saved. Then run the statistics
that the chapter ask you to run for example, crosstabulation.

Third, Save your output. Next, Past your output into another word processing
application.

Lastly, once you have pasted your output into another application. Explain
your output and print it. Now turn it in. Wasn’t that interesting!!! Are
you having fun yet?
Week Six: Assignment Five

Read chapter 5 and lets learn how to create bar charts. This will be rather
simple. Open your own data file and follow the tutorial in the chapter.
Always follow the examples in the chapter first if you feel uncomfortable.

Paste your output into another application (word processor) and explain
your graph and print and turn it in.
Week Seven: Assignment Six

Now chapter 6 will help you to continue to learn about charts. Specifically,
you will learn how to create and modify a scatterplot.

Open your data file and follow the instructions in the chapter. Print your
output and turn it in. Note: (If you want to be creative paste your output
in another application and explain it. This is not necessary, just thought
you might like to try it).
Week Eight: Assignment Seven

Read chapter 7 which will introduce you to modifying data values. Follow
the tutorial and then open your own data file and try recoding some of
your variables. Print your data file after you have recoded the variables
and turn it in.
Week Nine: Assignment Eight

Chapter 8 is a tutorial in working with Syntax. Follow the instructions
in the chapter and write a short paragraph on what you learned about Syntax
and it’s purpose. Turn in the paragraph.
Week Ten: Assignment Nine

Read chapter 10 and follow the instructions. Try at least 2 new calculations
and print and turn in your output.
Week Eleven: No assignment due
Week Twelve: Assignment Ten

Read chapter 11. Chapter 11 introduces you to sorting and selecting data.
Follow the tutorial. Then open your data file and try and do some of the
commands with your file. Print something that you accomplished.
Week Thirteen: Assignment Eleven

Read chapter 12. Chapter 12 introduces you to additional statistical procedures.
Follow the tutorial after you have finished open your own data file and
run at least three additional statistics. Paste your three outputs into
another application and explain what you found in a report style. Print
the report and turn it in.

This is your last SPSS assignment. I hope you have learned a lot.
