On March 17,
1969, President Morris was named a member of the St. Louis Symphony Society
Board of Directors. At the same time, an announcement was made of the inauguration
of a special summer music festival to be known as the Mississippi River
Festival. The new Mississippi River Festival, or MRF, would feature classical
concerts by the St. Louis Symphony and performances by folk and pop music
artists as well. The site selected for the outdoor concerts was a natural
amphitheater located near the north edge of campus which frequently had
been used to accommodate university graduation ceremonies.
