A monumental
elm tree, reported to be one of the largest elms in the nation, stood on
the Edwardsville campus property just a short distance from highway Bypass
66. Unfortunately, the magnificent tree fell victim to Dutch elm disease.
Despite efforts to save the treasured local landmark, the tree ultimately
had to be removed on September 17, 1963. The remarkable elm stood 77 feet
tall, was more than 6 feet in diameter, and had a spread of 125 feet.
