President Morris
was an astute politician who also understood how to create publicity and
manipulate public opinion. He began holding graduation ceremonies on the
Edwardsville lands which the university had managed to acquire long before
the entire projected site could be obtained. Here Morris welcomes Illinois
Governor William G. Stratton to the very first Edwardsville campus commencement
on June 14, 1960. In his address to the graduates, Stratton strongly advocated
public support for the upcoming statewide universities bond issue due to
go before the voters in November.
