Course Description:
Latin 102/499b is a continuation of Latin 101/499a which offers credit at the freshman-sophomore level (102) or at the senior-graduate level (499b). The student will continue learning the Latin language--basic grammar, vocabulary, and syntax--and will acquire enough knowledge of these elements to begin reading Latin.
Objective: The objective of this course is to give students an introductory knowledge of the Latin language.
Text:
Frederic Wheelock and Richard LaFleur. Wheelock's Latin. Sixth Edition. Harper, 2005.
Requirements:
Students will be required to prepare approximately one chapter per class meeting. Preparation includes mastery of all the material in the chapter as well as completion of any additional written, translation or reading assignments given. Attendance and participation in class are required. In addition, quizzes, two unit tests and a final exam will be given. This course also requires that students spend two hours per week completing language lab work. This is why the course gives four credit hours instead of three.
Attendance:
Regular and punctual attendance is essential to mastering the material covered in this course. Students who miss more than five class hours should expect to fail the course.
Grading:
Course grades will be figured by the following percentages: Unit tests = 20% each; Final = 35%; Quizzes, daily assignments, participation and lab work = 25%.
Schedule: Students should come to class having prepared the chapter(s) assigned for a given day. Preparation means that all paradigms, grammatical principles and vocabulary presented in the chapter have been memorized and that all exercises at the end of the chapter have been completed in writing and brought to class.
