Lesson #1: What is a Line?

Below, is the same picture of a line. Next to it, is the formal mathematical definition of a line as well as some characteristics.

                       Directions:
Write down a comparison between your description of the line and the definition and characteristics I have given you.

                      Graph of y=x
Line: A straight, one-dimensional figure having no thickness and                           extending infinitely in both directions

Characteristics:
- Made up of an infinite number of points
- Does not curve!
- Crosses the y-axis and the x-axis only once
- Can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal

Some things you could discuss in your comparison:
- How was your description different?
- How was it the same?
- What were you surprised about?
- How would you change your definition?
