1. All kids under 18 must have an adult with them when they go fishing. One adult can supervise 15 kids. It is very important that everyone pays attention to the adult so that accidents do not happen.
2. When you turn 16 you have to sign up for a fishing license. You must carry the license with you every time you go fishing. You can get your fishing license in bait shops, farm stores or Walmart. You can even get your fishing license online at this link.
3. Never litter! Take all trash, leftover bait and fish remains to the trash can. This helps keep the lake and surrounding areas clean and helps protect the wildlife as well. Fish are especially sensitive to pollution, if we do not take care of the lake the fish will die.
4. Every type of fish you catch has a rule about how long it has to be and how many you can catch in one day. This limit lets the small fish grow bigger and gives everyone a fair chance at finding enough fish. We will cover the amounts in the next lesson on fish types, but it is very important that you measure and count your fish. Ask an adult for help if you can't remember the size or catch limit.
5. Be respectful to other fishermen. It is exciting to go fishing, but remember that when you shout you may scare the fish away. If other fishermen are near you, this can spoil their fishing trip as well. Be sure to give other fishermen enough space to do their fishing and to use your speaking voices so you do not scare all of the fish away.
6. You may see some signs or people with badges that say Conservation Police. These are people who watch to make sure that people are following the rules so that your time fishing is fun and safe. Just like a police officer writing tickets to people who speed, you may get a ticket for breaking a rule. Be respectful and listen to the Conservation Police.
7. Always practice safe fishing. It is very important to be careful when you are casting and to pick up your hook when not using it. Hooks are very sharp and can just as easily hook into a person as it can a fish. Remember, if you or a friend get a hook stuck in your skin, go to an adult for help removing it! Pulling it out on your own could make it worse.
