SIU School of Dental Medicine’s Exemplary Service for Area Veterans Is Featured in RiverBender.com
On November 9, the SIU School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) offered free comprehensive dental care to area veterans in honor of Veteran’s Day. During SIU SDM Veteran’s Care Day, third and fourth-year dental students performed exams, cleanings and 84 teeth extractions while treating a total of 88 veterans. Their story appeared in Riverbender.com.
“Most veterans are not actually eligible for dental benefits through the VA, so many are left without a dental home,” said Katie Kosten, DMD, FACD, FICD, director of community dentistry. "We hear from the patients time and time again what a wonderful service this is and how appreciative they are."
The community clinic provided $57,771 in dental care that day at no cost to the patients.
