Filled with Cougar pride, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus exudes vibrancy, with anticipation growing for the start of the fall 2023 semester. The Class of 2027 kicked off SIUE’s Welcome Weekend celebrations with the University’s traditional greeting and new student convocation. 

“Every new student comes to SIUE expecting to succeed,” said Miriam Roccia, interim vice chancellor for student affairs. “This weekend will start them on that path and reaffirm that there are outstanding staff and faculty dedicated to supporting them throughout their journeys.”

The incoming class received advice and encouragement from senior Mackenzie Richards, president of Student Government, during new student convocation.

“You have the opportunity to have as big or as small an impact here as you want,” said Richards. “The resources and support you will have in making change and having a big presence here will far outweigh any hindrances you might face. Students make up the vision of this university, and you are the ones who make SIUE what it is now, and what it can be in the future.”

Following convocation, the Class of 2027 paraded through cheering upperclass students, faculty and staff to the heart of campus as part of the long-standing SIUE tradition of the annual class photo. Students then enjoyed a sweet-treat social leading into the multitude of fun activities that are part of SIUE’s Welcome Weekend.

“Welcome Weekend is such an exciting and important time for our new students,” Roccia said. “With dozens of activities and events designed to foster connection and belonging, the weekend is focused on introducing students to resources, expectations and the tools available to help them succeed from new student convocation through commencement.”

Activities throughout the weekend include events like the Cougar Kick-off, movie night, trivia, day of service and other activities hosted by SIUE student organizations.
