SIUE’s Luo Publishes Three Monographs in Applied Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering
Albert Luo, PhD, distinguished research professor in the School of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, has recently published three books based in the field of applied mathematics and mechanical engineering.
The first book is a unique monograph about two-dimensional quadratic dynamical systems with different points of view. “Two-dimensional Quadratic Nonlinear Systems, Vol. I: Univariate Vector Fields” works to try and solve the Hilbert sixteenth problem, a mathematical problem that has been unsolved for 120 years.
“The study provides a new thinking and methodology for nonlinear dynamics and sciences,” explained Luo. “The book systematically developed brand-new theories and techniques. One should change one's thinking from one-dimensional to two-dimensional thinking.”
Luo and Chuan Guo, PhD, former SIUE graduate student, teamed up to write “Nonlinear Vibration Reduction- an Electromagnetically Tuned Mass Damper System”. The book provides a methodology to determine complex motions in vibration reduction and energy harvesting, which guides people to do experiments and design for engineering applications.
Luo and former SIUE graduate student Yu Guo, PhD, wrote “Periodic Motions to Chaos in a Spring-pendulum System”.
“The monograph helps one understand a simple mechanical model can generate complex motions,” Luo said. “Such models can be built to demonstrate to high school students and stimulate their interests for science. The text can also help one teach university students in physics and engineering.”
Each book can be purchased on Springer Link.
