SIUE's Simpson Excels in Exchange Program with SIU Carbondale
Consistent with the strategic plan of the Southern Illinois University System, the Department of Applied Communication Studies (ACS) in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has implemented a course sharing program aimed with the School of Communication Studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). For SIUE junior Allison Simpson, this means that she can accelerate her education in sports public relations.
Majoring in applied communication studies on a public relations track and minoring in mass communication, Simpson has enrolled into a sports public relations course at SIUC, matching her professional interests.
“The class is about exploring the role of PR within sports and recreation organizations and the relationship between these industries and the media,” said Simpson. “I chose it because I thought it would be great experience to learn more about sports PR since I want to work in the sports industry after I graduate college.”
The course has afforded Simpson the opportunity to enhance her competencies and knowledge in event management, sports media, storytelling, agreements and endorsements.
Joshua Houston, MA, senior lecturer in communication studies at SIUC, teaches the course.
“The goal of the course is to provide students with information and skills necessary to enter the sports industry and build a career as a communicator,” said Houston. “At the same time, the course allows students with other career goals, but a passion for sports, the chance to better understand what goes on behind the scenes. Prior to joining the SIUC faculty, I worked as a communicator for a sports festival and also for a college athletic department. I remember what I did not know then, but wish I had, and I pass that information along to my students.”
For Simpson, being at SIUE has already proved to be the right choice for her. She was attracted to the University because of the strong ACS program and the opportunities for career advancement following graduation.
“With SIUE’s proximity to St. Louis, I have been able to secure an internship with the St. Louis Battlehawks and the St. Louis Cardinals,” she said.
With such an exchange program in place, the students in the two programs at SIUE and SIUC will continue to be able to enroll into classes that are unique to either university.
