SIUE and Edwardsville Arts Center Present “Weave, Coil, Twine, Plait, Knot” Exhibition
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s University Museum Executive Curator Erin Vigneau-Dimick has co-curated an exhibition with artist Sun Smith-Foret currently on display at the Edwardsville Arts Center under the title, “Weave, Coil, Twine, Plait, Knot: Traditional and Contemporary Basketry.”
The exhibition brings together historic examples and modern interpretations of the ancient craft and practice of basketmaking.
It allows art and history enthusiasts to view ethnographic examples drawn from the SIUE University Museum and invited contemporary artists, including works from private collections.
A special panel lecture will be held March 18 from 3:30 pm to 5:30 p.m. at the Edwardsville’s Art Center. Exhibition goers will have the opportunity to learn from curators, contemporary artists and collectors about connections, meanings, materials and the ongoing work in functional and sculptural basketry.
The exhibition is open to the public until March 24.
