SIUE Takes Top Prize at ACI Illinois Chapter Concrete Bowling Competition
The Luke Snell American Concrete Institute (ACI) Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Student Chapter proved victorious in the ACI Illinois Chapter’s Fiber Reinforced Concrete Bowling Ball competition held Saturday, Feb. 9 in Elmhurst.
According to the ACI Illinois Chapter, the objective of the concrete competition is to demonstrate the benefits of fiber use in concrete, to facilitate interaction between industry professionals and student members, and to enable students to earn money toward competing at the ACI competition to be held in Quebec City, Canada on Monday, March 25.
SIUE’s team received a first-place cash prize of $750. They competed against teams from Valparaiso University and University of Illinois at Chicago. Industry participants were represented by Flood Testing, Elmhurst Chicago Stone and Ozinga Chicago Ready-Mixed Concrete.
“It was amazing that our team designed and constructed the bowling ball to meet the specifications in such a short time frame,” said senior construction management major Dalton Brookshire, of Nokomis, and Luke Snell ACI SIUE Student Chapter president. “To have competed and proven victorious over other universities with a larger number of students on their teams was incredibly rewarding.”
SIUE’s fiber-reinforced concrete bowling ball weighed in at 12 pounds with a diameter of 190 mm. Competition specifications require the ball does not exceed 12.12 pounds, and has a diameter of 185-215 mm.
During the competition, each team has to bowl five standard frames at 10 feet with their ball. A deflection test is then conducted. Visit concrete.org to learn more and view a competition.
