Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Head Start/Early Head Start students enjoyed a day of playing and learning about robotics on Tuesday, March 8 from the SIUE Upward Bound Math and Science Center staff.
At the invitation of the Discovery Center Head Start, the Math and Science staff visited approximately 30 students ages three-five and taught robotics while conducting STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related activities.
“Through the power of play, children create connections and understanding between science and technology,” said Math and Science Program Director Elke Harris-McIntosh. “Computer science is a growing field, and early exposure to this career path is essential for those historically underrepresented in STEM fields.”
STEM Coordinator Candi Johnson showed students the Lego Mindstorm EV3 robot named Oliver. Johnson demonstrated and explained how she programmed Oliver to listen and follow her commands.
The Head Start students built their own robots from “found objects,” under the direction of Lara Jennings, Math and Science program counselor. The children learned how otherwise discarded trash can be reused to make robots and art.
“This was an amazing collaboration,” said Heidi Eichenseer, Discover Center Head Start coordinator. “The children got to further their knowledge of different ways to build and explore robots, and see what the future has to offer. Their excitement towards the robots was wonderful.”
With a focus on empowering people and strengthening communities, the SIUE East St. Louis Center is dedicated to improving the lives of families and individuals—from pre-school through adult—in the Metro East region. The Center offers programs that give the community renewed hope and an opportunity to reach educational, career and life goals. It does so by providing comprehensive programs, services and training in the areas of education, health, social services and the arts.
