Research Assistantship (1952-2024)

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who:
- has been admitted to or is currently enrolled in the Post-secondary Mathematics Education graduate program or other graduate programs in Mathematics; preference will be given to a graduate student specializing in Post-secondary Mathematics Education,
- demonstrates commitment to working with students in communities that are under-served by traditional mathematics education,
- works on communicating mathematics well, and
- has interest in qualitative data analysis methods.

Position Description

Overview & Purpose:
SIUE, Educational Testing Service (ETS), the Algebra Project, the Young People’s Project (YPP), and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) are collaborating as partners to examine the role of collaboration on the development of high school students’ ideas related to the concept of function. Research assistants at SIUE will have the opportunity to collaborate with members of the research team at the partner organizations to learn and apply qualitative data analysis methods in mathematics education. Specific research activities will include the following:
• Apply and refine qualitative coding schemes and contribute to training coders.
• Contribute to the analysis of the teacher survey instrument; refine teacher survey instrument.
• Contribute to the scoring of constructed response items.
• Examine teacher feedback on the teacher-facing learning progression elicited during Year 2 professional development and contribute to the development of a refined teacher-facing learning progression.
• Contribute to facilitation and implementation of professional development.
• Contribute to the dissemination of results.
• Continue literature review.
This opportunity is open to graduate students admitted to the department of Mathematics and Statistics at SIUE. To take part in this opportunity, you must be a full-time student for the 2023 – 2024 academic year. You must also commit to a workload of 10-hours per week of project time.
