ARTISTS STATEMENT:
SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT:
- Fossils provide critical evidence about extinct organisms, and allow biologists and geologists to trace evolutionary history
- While finding fossils can be difficult, sometimes it's even harder to figure out what the organism looked like when it was alive (how-do-paleontologists-identify-fossils). This is particularly true when fossil organisms differ from organisms living today.
- A great example of this problem are fossils from the burgess shale, a rock formation over 500 million years old that contains representatives of a wide range of organisms (https://paleobiology.si.edu/burgess/).
