Philosophy, Science, and Religion (Vailati) Fall 2012

Write a paper on one of the following topics. For due date and requirements, consult the syllabus.

1. What do you think is the main point of contention between Galileo and Bellarmino? How would you relate it to today’s discussion on the proper role between religion and science in the USA? In your discussion make precise references to the primary texts you read in the course.

2. By today's standards, the most famous book in science, Newton's Principia, contains a surprising amount of theology. Why? How does Newton relate his scientific and theological views?  In your discussion, make precise references to the primary texts we read in the course.

3. By using a specific example covered in the course (different from Galileo's case), state, justify, and defend against the most obvious objections your views about the proper relation between science and religion. Make sure than in your analysis you make precise references to the texts you read in the course.

4. Assume that Stratigraphy and the Theory of Evolution are correct. Should one conclude that the Bible is just mistaken, and therefore just a piece of mythology or superstition? In your analysis, make precise references to the texts you read in this course.
