SIUE Launches Enhanced SIUE Commitment and SIUE Gateway Opportunity, Increasing College Affordability for Low and Middle-Income Families
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is excited to announce an expanded version of the SIUE Commitment and SIUE Gateway Opportunity (SIUE GO), groundbreaking initiatives aimed at increasing college affordability and ensuring access to higher education for low and middle-income families. With the commitment to provide an extra boost to students and their families, SIUE is reinforcing its dedication to the region's students and the transformative power of a college degree.
Families across the country often face financial challenges when it comes to supporting their scholars in pursuing a college education. Recognizing this, SIUE has launched the enhanced SIUE Commitment and SIUE GO financial assistance programs that cover tuition, mandatory fees, and course-specific fees for eligible students. The programs will help close the financial gap after applying financial aid from all federal, state, and institutional sources, including merit-based scholarships.
Starting Fall 2024, the SIUE Commitment will increase the income threshold for eligibility, making college affordable for a greater number of low and middle-income families. Families with an annual income of $113,575 or less will qualify for the program, up from the previous threshold of $63,575. To be eligible for the SIUE Commitment, incoming freshmen or transfer students must have a family income of $113,575 or less. Students must also be Illinois residents who attended an Illinois high school and be enrolled full-time in a bachelor's program.
This form of SIUE support now extends to St. Louis-region families with the launch of SIUE GO. SIUE GO aims to increase college affordability and ensure access to higher education for students who may need an extra financial boost to pursue their dreams.
Similar to the SIUE Commitment, the income threshold eligibility for SIUE GO amounts to $113,575, allowing a greater number of low and middle-income St. Louis region families to qualify for SIUE GO, renewable up to four years. Students must also be Missouri residents who attended a Missouri high school. Participating counties include the City of St. Louis, St. Louis, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, and Warren.
SIUE is committed to meeting students where they are and closing equity gaps. Currently, nearly a third of SIUE undergraduates are Pell eligible, and almost half of the recent graduating class completed their degree without student loan debt. SIUE is dedicated to making social mobility possible for all individuals and entire families.
